English author, born in London on the 2nd of May; was secretary to Herbert Spencer for five years; assistant librarian in Cornell University from 1890 to 1892; assistant professor of English literature at Leland Stanford University in 1892; published The Church and the Stage (1886); An Introduction to the Study of Herbert Spencer (1893); and Introduction to the Philosophy of Herbert Spencer (1894).
