[or Waitstill].  Lawyer and patriot, born at Groton, CT, on the 3rd of May 1741; died in Burke County, NC, on the 15th of March 1821; graduated at Princeton in 1766; went to Mecklenburg, NC, to practice law; was one of the alleged signers of the “Mecklenburg Declaration”; was sent to the Hillsborough congress in 1775; in 1776 was sent to the state congress; in 1777 was elected attorney-general of the state; and in 1779 was colonel of militia in active service.
