Bishop of Tours, commemorated as a confessor in the beginning of the fifth century. St. Brices Day in 1002 (in the reign of Æthelred II.) is notorious in old English history for a great massacre of the Danes. It is believed that it was a concerted attempt to exterminate all the Danes in England, but, failing of its bloody purpose, it led to reprisals by the Danish king Sweyn. See also Lives of the Saints.
