American statesman, born at Denmark, OH, on the 17th of September 1845. He entered Miami University, Oxford, OH, in 1857, and after serving in the Civil War, graduated in 1863. After this he re-entered the service as captain of an Ohio volunteer corps, being inactive service until 1865. He then studied law in the University of Michigan, and was admitted to practice in the United States district and circuit courts at Cincinnati in 1866. He was chairman of the National Democratic Committee in 1889, and in the following year was elected United States Senator, to succeed the Hon. Henry B. Payne, for a six-year term, commencing March 4, 1891.
