The conqueror and first king of the entire group of the Hawaiian Islands, better known as the Sandwich Islands, born in Hawaii, about 1753. With the aid of some European vessels and firearms he subdued one chief and one island after the other until he became master of the whole group in 1809. He introduced considerable civilization, and kept several white mechanics in his employ. He died on the 8th of May 1819.
