California pioneer and soldier, born in Meredith, NH, on the 19th of May 1817. After graduation from West Point in 1840, he served in the Seminole war and in outpost duty along the Northern frontier. He was for a time instructor in infantry tactics at West Point, and in 1846 was detailed for duty in the quartermaster’s department in California. There he left the service and became a leader in the early territorial organization. He was collector for the port of San Francisco from 1846 to 1848, and gave the first official report of the gold discoveries. He died in San Jose, CA, on the 19th of July 1855.
