American soldier, born in Bellefonte, PA, on the 19th of July 1826; served through the Mexican War, becoming first lieutenant of the Eleventh Infantry in February, 1847, and captain in the following September. At the commencement of the Civil War he was chosen colonel of the Fifth Pennsylvania Volunteers; in May 1861 was made captain of the Sixth United States Cavalry; appointed colonel of the Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry in October 1862, he commanded a cavalry brigade in the army of the Potomac from 1863 till 1865. He was brevetted major-general of volunteers, and brigadier-general of the United States army for distinguished services during the war, and retired in 1879. He died in Washington, DC, on the 6th of January 1892.
