French general, born in Louisiana on the 29th of August 1759, and died at Constantinople, where he was ambassador on the 17th of December 1797. During the war of the American Revolution he fought with the Continental army, being on the staff of Rochambeau. He was elected to the French legislative assembly in 1791, and during the revolution of 1793 commanded at Mainz, which fell, after a siege, into the hands of the Prussians. During several months of 1795 he was minister of war.
