1832. The “Racks” so called, along the [Hudson] river, were Dutch names for Reaches. Thus, Martelaers rack meant the Martyr’s reach or struggling place; Lange rack was Long reach; and Klauver rack, Clover reach, &c.—Watson, ‘Historic Tales of New York,’ p. 27.
