1835. C. R. Gilman in ‘Life on the Lakes,’ i. 55 n. (N.Y.), 1836, attributes the coinage of this word to Senator Ewing of Ohio, observing that the Senator “is the very man of all the world who should be called Buck Eye and not Ohian.”
