1897.  The mud-puppy was different. No power on earth would induce a boy to touch that slate-colored, slimy, writhing shape. This creature, by the way, is a repulsive-looking water-lizard. His heavy body, four stumpy legs, apparant lack of eyes, and bunches of external gills, were neither understood nor appreciated by his captors.—‘Outing,’ xxx. 439. (N.E.D.)
