1867.  [In Andersonville prison] a thief, for instance, was termed a “flanker,” or a “half shave.”… Where a thief had the boldness to steal in open daylight, and by a dash, grab, and run, to get off with his booty, he was termed a “raider,” which was considered one grade above the sneaking “flanker.”—W.
