American soldier, born in Gloucester, MA, on the 1st of May 1753. He was a sea-captain till 1776, when he joined the army, serving through the Revolution; was successively purveyor-general, secretary and governor, from 1798 to 1801, of the Northwest Territory; was in St. Clair’s and Wayne’s Indian expeditions; was a member of the American Society of the Arts and Sciences, and several other bodies, and aided Benjamin S. Smith in preparing Papers Relative to Certain American Antiquities. He was governor of the territory of Mississippi in 1790 and 1791, and died in New Orleans on the 3rd of June 1820.—His grandson, Winthrop Sargent, author; born in Philadelphia, PA, on the 23rd of September 1825. He edited The History of Braddock’s Expedition Against Du Quesne (1855) and Loyalist Poetry of the Revolution; and wrote The Life and Career of Major John André. He died in Paris, France, on the 18th of May 1870.
