American novelist; born in Ogdensburg, NY, on the 20th of April 1812; studied medicine at the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1833. After practicing his profession for several years, he traveled in Spain and Morocco, where he found much material for the novels which he wrote after his return to America. Among his best-known books are Kaloolah; or, Journeyings to the Djebel Kumri (1849); Romance-Dust from the Historic Placer (1851); and Never Again. He died at New York, on the 22nd of November 1895.
