English pianist, musical composer, author and teacher. He arranged and edited various classical operas and was known as a voluminous composer of salon pieces, such as Christabel, and others. His other works include Abbey Lands: A Tale (1857); The Choristers of St. Mary’s (1858); A History of Music (1879); Practical Harmony for Students (1879); The Life of George Frederick Handel (1883); Mendelssohn (1883); A General History of Music from the Infancy of the Greek Drama to the Present Period (1886). He wrote many articles for this Encyclopædia.
