American essayist, born in Waterville, ME, on the 28th of July 1818; practiced law in Washington, and published newspapers in Maine and in Boston, and in 1856 removed to Chicago. He became professor of rhetoric and English literature in the University of Chicago in 1862. He retained that position for thirteen years, and in 1880 he removed to Boston. He is the author of many works of general circulation.
