American capitalist and politician, born at Lexington, IN, on the 27th of August 1822. He graduated from Hanover College, Indiana; studied law; became an influential Democrat, and held governmental positions under Presidents Tyler and Polk. In 1852 he was elected to Congress, and was re-elected in 1856 and 1858. During the war he accumulated a large fortune in the banking business. In 1880 he was the Democratic candidate for the Vice-Presidency, on the ticket with Gen. W. S. Hancock, and suffered defeat with him. He died in Indianapolis, IN, on the 7th of February 1896.
