American soldier and statesman, born in Chester County, PA, in 1762. He served through the Revolutionary war, and was present at the battle of Brandywine as colonel on the staff of Lafayette. He was with Washington at Valley Forge, and took part in the battle of Germantown and was at the surrender at Yorktown. From 1809 to 1815 and from 1817 to 1819 he was in Congress, and was afterward a county court judge and collector of customs. His daughter Evelina married Com. D. Porter. He died in Pennsylvania on the 14th of December 1829.
