German art historian, born at Dortmund, Westphalia, on the 17th of January 1826. After studying at Bonn and Berlin, he soon attracted attention by his articles on the history of art, published in the Deutsche Kunstblatt, which caused him to be appointed professor of the history of architecture in the Berlin School of Architecture. Lübke made several journeys in Italy, France and Belgium for the purpose of studying church architecture. In 1861 he became professor of archæology and the history of art in the Polytechnic School at Zurich, and in 1866 at Stuttgart. Finally he settled at Carlsruhe as professor at the Superior Technical School and director of the Grand Duke of Baden’s picture-gallery. Among his most esteemed works are Geschichte der Architektur (6th ed., 1884); Grundriss der Kunstgeschichte (7th ed., 1875); Geschichte der Plastik (2d ed., 1870). His History of Art was translated into English and published in the United States in 1880. He died on the 5th of April 1893.
