American manufacturer and philanthropist, born in Salem, IN, on the 4th of January 1822; died in Chicago, IL, on the 5th of May 1887. He was a grandson of a Frenchman who accompanied Lafayette to America, to take part in the war for independence. Mr. DePauw engaged in legal work, milling, the grain business, and in the manufacture of plate glass. He endowed the DePauw University, at Greencastle, IN, to which he gave, at his death, $1,500,000, and he was one of the founders of DePauw Female College, at Albany, IN.
