Signer of the Declaration of Independence, born in Prince George Parish, SC, on the 5th of August 1749. On the organization of the first regiment of South Carolina provincials in 1775 he was commissioned a captain, and in 1776 was elected to a seat in the Continental Congress. On account of failing health he embarked in 1779 for the south of France, but the ship in which he sailed was seen for the last time when a few days out at sea, and probably was lost in a storm.
