American author, born in Vermont in 1804. In 1839 he organized and took charge of an expedition across the continent from Vermont. While in California he obtained the release of a large number of American and English citizens who had been imprisoned by the Mexican government. He published Travels in Oregon Territory (1842); Travels in California (1845); The Northwest Boundary Line (1845); and Mexico: Its Geography, People and Institutions (1846). He died in California in 1848.
