British navigator, born in Stockport on the 6th of November 1796; died on the 23rd of June 1878. After serving against the French in 1809, in 1819 he accompanied Sir John Franklin on an Arctic voyage; was sent out in 1833 to search for Captain Ross, and made several important discoveries. He was knighted in 1839 and made an admiral in 1867. He published an account of his Arctic voyages.
