[Bart.].  British statesman, born in Plymouth, England, on the 21st of June 1784. He entered the army in 1804; was in active service until 1837, when he was knighted and appointed lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, with the rank of major-general on the staff. In 1841 he returned to England, was created a baronet in recognition of his services in Canada, and from 1842 to 1846 was governor of the Indian presidency of Bombay. Ill health compelled him to leave India, and upon his arrival in England he was made privy councillor, and in 1853 received the colonelcy of the Fiftieth (Queen’s Own) Regiment. He died on the 19th of September 1854.
