American author, born in Hingham, MA, in 1814. In 1842 he became a lecturing agent for the American Antislavery Society, and from 1844 to 1857 was editor of the New York Antislavery Standard. He then became connected with the Tribune, and from 1862 to 1866 was managing editor. From 1867 to 1871 he was editor of the Chicago Tribune, and from 1872 to 1874 was on the editorial staff of the New York Evening Post. He was an ardent abolitionist; wrote a History of the United States (1881) in conjunction with William Cullen Bryant, and was the author of a Life of James Madison (1884). He died on the 25th of June 1888 in New Brighton, Staten Island.
