American clergyman, traveler and orientalist, born on the 2nd of May 1837, in Canton Center, CT; passed through Yale and the New Haven Theological Seminary. He was ordained an evangelist in 1864; and was chaplain of the Forthy-ninth United States Infantry (colored) at Vicksburg, MS; studied in Germany (1868–70); made archæological researches in Palestine (1874–77); was United States consul at Jerusalem (1882–86), during which period he located the site of Calvary. He brought back from the Holy Land interesting collections of antiquities, birds, animals and plants. His narrative, East of the Jordan (1881), was widely read, as was his Galilee in the Time of Christ (1881). His consular reports and his contributions to archæological periodicals contain matter of high value concerning the state of Palestine in the days of Christ and at the present time.
