Author; born in Argos, Greece, on the 12th of February 1837; graduated from Williams College in 1859; assistant librarian of the New York State Library from 1861 to 1864; United States minister to Persia from 1883 to 1885. He has published many books, among them Constantinople, Isle of Pearls, and other Poems; What is Art? Art in America; Troy: Its Legend, Literature and Topography; and Persia and the Persians. He also acquired a considerable reputation as an artist. Among his paintings are Porta da Cruz, Madeira; The Wide, Wide Sea; and In the Roaring Forties.
