American author, the youngest child of Nathaniel Hawthorne; born in Lenox, MA, on the 20th of May 1851. Most of her childhood was spent in Europe, where she studied painting. In 1871 she married George Parsons Lathrop, and afterward wrote stories and poems for the magazines. She published Along the Shore, a volume of poems, in 1888, and together with her husband, a Story of Courage, in 1894.
