British clergyman and writer, born in York, England, on the 9th of June 1753. He entered the ministry of the Church of England in 1778, and was successively assistant librarian in the British Museum, canon of Lichfield, archdeacon of Stafford and rector of All Hallows Church, London. He published, in addition to sermons and theological discussions, Elements of Orthoëpy (1784) and Glossary of Phrases, Names and Allusions (1822). He was also editor of the British Critic from 1793 to 1797. He died in London on the 23rd of March 1829.
