American theologian and author, born in Fayette County, PA, on the 6th of October 1798. He was educated at Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, and at Princeton Theological Seminary; spent several years in Europe, and was for some years corresponding secretary of the American and Foreign Christian Union. Among his works may be mentioned The History of the Waldenses, Albigenses and Vaudois; The History of Temperance Societies; and The Religion of America. He died at Yonkers, NY, on the 15th of March 1863.
