American Indian, a celebrated chief of the Senecas, whose native name was Sa-go-ye-wat-ha (“He keeps them awake”); born at Old Castle, near the foot of Seneca Lake, in 1752. He sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, helped the Americans against Tecumseh 1809–10, and against the British 1812–14; retired to the Seneca Reservation, near Buffalo; lost his chieftainship for a time on account of drunkenness; was a violent opponent of missionaries and schools.
