American clergyman and author, born in Boston on the 23rd of July 1793. For a while he was an instructor in Harvard University, and from 1815 to 1850 was pastor of the First Congregational Church (Unitarian), in Boston. He contributed to various religious periodicals; and published, besides many sermons, Deism or Christianity (1845); Sermons in the Order of a Twelvemonth (1852); and Metrical Pieces, Translated and Original (1855). He died in Boston on the 4th of April 1870. See also “The Crossed Swords.”
