German historian, born at Cassel on the 1st of April 1828; educated at the universities of Bonn, Marburg and Berlin; chosen professor of universal history at Zurich University in 1861, he returned to Vienna in 1872 as professor of history and director of the Historical School. His literary works were numerous and of varied subject-matter. Many of his contributions appeared in the Vienna University Bulletin. His books include A History of Austria to the End of the Thirteenth Century (1858); A Book of Hungarian History (1866); Wellington (1869); Lafayette (1870); and Egyptian Influence on Hebrew Culture (1875).
