American novelist, born at Salem, MA, on the 9th of April 1827, and began to write about 1850, her first work appearing in the Atlantic Monthly. In 1854 her famous book, The Lamplighter, appeared, and at once became such a favorite that 40,000 copies were disposed of within eight weeks from its first publication. Her other works include Mabel Vaughan (1857); El Fureidis (1860); Haunted Hearts (1864). She died in Dorchester, now a part of Boston, on the 1st of October 1866.
