British encyclopædist, born in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 11th of April 1776. His first literary work published in separate form was a treatise on the Philosophical Works of Lord Bacon (1817). He is known principally, however, for his work as editor of the Supplement to the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Constable in 1815–24. He died in Edinburgh on the 11th of February 1847.
