[Lucy Virginia; née Smith].  American writer and poetess, born in the Eastern Shore, MD; educated at Washington Female Seminary, Pennsylvania; wrote for the newspapers and magazines, being known as “L’Inconnue”; became editor of The Crusader, published in Atlanta, GA; and married J. H. French of McMinnville, TN, in 1853. Her works include Wind-Whispers, poems (1856); Iztalilxo, a tragedy (1859); My Roses (1871); and Legends of the South (1867). She died on the 31st of March 1881.
