German philologist and ethnologist, born at Ostheim, Hesse, on the 29th of July 1806; studied theology and philosophy at Giessen, and music and modern languages at Frankfort-on-the-Main. He traveled much, and devoted himself to pastoral work for twelve years. In 1848 he settled at Frankfort, and died there on the 28th of March 1883. His literary industry was enormous, as well in the line of poetry and romance as in the heavy and learned works which have placed him among great scholars. He published, among other works, Celtica (1839–41); Gedichte (1840); Lexicon Comparativum Linguarum Indo-Germanicarum (1846–51); and Glossarium Latinum Germanicum Mediæ et Infimæ Ætatis (1857).
