American soldier, born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1753; educated at Robert Prout’s Quaker School; entered the Continental army in the First Pennsylvania Regiment (1776); lieutenant-colonel (1777); was in Washington’s army (1778–80), and in General Greene’s corps, in the South (1781–82); brevet-colonel (1783); brought to France the ratification of the final treaty (1784); was present as Indian agent at the treaty with the Indians at Fort Mcintosh (1785); brevetted by Congress brigadier-general (1787); general-in-chief of the United States army (1789); commanded an expedition against the Miami Indians (1790); resigned (1792); adjutant-general of Pennsylvania (1793–96). He died in Philadelphia on the 20th of August 1813.
