Music critic and journalist, born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England, on the 29th of November 1831; went to London, and from 1855 to 1870 wrote for the Sunday Times and the Musical Standard; since 1870 he has been employed by the Daily Telegraph; published a series of sketches of composers in the Musical Times, which have since been issued in book form as Primers of Musical Biography; made a tour of the United Statesin 1885; has written the librettos for a number of oratorios, among them Mackenzie’s Rose of Sharon and Sullivan’s Golden Legend.
