American educator, born in Cairo, NY, on the 4th of January 1807. He was graduated at Union College in 1829, became pastor of the Congregational Church at Williamstown, MA, then professor in Williams College, later president of Jefferson College, and from 1867 to 1872 president of the New York State Normal School at Albany. He was a prolific writer, and published more than seventy volumes, the best known of which are The Example of Washington; The Science of Government; Citizen’s Manual; and First Steps in Political Economy. He died in New York City on the 30th of August 1885.
