Statesman, born in Honduras, Central America; died in New York City on the 4th of August 1854. He headed the revolutionary party in its struggle against Spain for independence; was the author of the decree for the abolition of slavery, and in 1829 was made president of the republic. He wrote a narrative of Central American history, and in 1852 was called again to the presidency, but declined, as three out of the five republics had seceded. He went to the United States as minister from Honduras, and died while on that mission.
