Cuban author and publicist, born in Bayamo on the 7th of May 1797; best known for his important works on the history and effects of slavery. He was frequently exiled for political reasons, and often sat as a deputy in the Spanish Cortes. Among his writings are Paralelo entre Cuba y Algunas Colonias Inglesas (1838), and Historia de la Esclavitud desde los Tiempos mas remotos (1876). He died in Barcelona, Spain, on the 26th of September 1879.
