[John Robert Sitlington].  American Greek scholar, born in Rockbridge Baths, VA, on the 4th of March 1851. He graduated at the University of Virginia, and afterward studied in Germany, at Berlin, Leipsic, Munich, and at Athens, Greece. He took part in several archæological expeditions in Palestine and Syria; returned to the United States, and was, in 1886–88, professor of Greek in Miami University; in 1888–92 in the University of Texas; and after 1892 at Amherst College. He published, in addition to contributions to philological journals, Preliminary Report of an Archæological Journey in Asia Minor in 1884 (1885); The Wolfe Expedition to Asia Minor (1888); and An Epigraphical Journey in Asia Minor (1888).
