English poet, born in London in 1842; a translator, and poet of the neo-romantic school. Among his translations are The Poems of François Villon (1881); The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (9 vols., 1882–84); Tales from the Arabic (1885); The Decameron of Boccaccio (1886). Among his other works are The Masque of Shadows (1870); Intaglios (1871); Songs of Life and Death (1872); Lautrec (1878); New Poems (1880); François Villon: A Biographical Study (1881).
