[Sir].  English orientalist and army officer, born in London in 1795. He was long a resident in China as chief superintendent of Canton, and afterward as governor and commander-in-chief of the colony of Hongkong. He was created a baronet in 1845. His China During the War and Since the Peace appeared in 1852, and was followed in 1857 by China: A General Description of that Empire, one of the most trustworthy authorities on China and the Chinese. He died in London on the 13th of November 1890.
