American ornithologist, born near Chester, PA, on the 6th of September 1813. His specialty was description and classification. He was one of the most active members of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, contributing much to its journal. His works include Illustrations of the Birds of California, Texas, Oregon, British and Russian America, commenced in 1855; Zoölogy of the United States Exploring Expedition; Quadrupeds and Birds (1855); Zoölogy of Gillies’s United States Astronomical Expedition to Chile (1855); American Ornithology, a general synopsis of North American ornithology, containing descriptions and figures of all North American birds not given by former American authors (1856); etc. He died in Philadelphia on the 10th of January 1869.
