British composer, born at Hull on the 10th of March 1823; graduated at Cambridge; was ordained in 1847, and appointed precentor of Durham Cathedral in 1849. In 1861 he received the degree of Mus.D. from the University of Durham, and in 1862 was presented to the vicarage of St. Oswald’s, in that city. Dr. Dykes was a joint editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern, and composed many anthem and hymn tunes, among which are Lead, Kindly Light; Nearer, My God, to Thee; and Jesus, Lover of My Soul. He died in Durham on the 22nd of January 1876.
