American colonial merchant, born in Haarlem, Holland, in 1600; died in New York City, about 1685. He was of Huguenot descent, from a family driven from France at the time of the St. Bartholomew massacre. Early in the history of New York he emigrated there and engaged in trading. He took an active part in provincial politics until the province passed under the control of the English.
