Swiss writer, author of The Swiss Family Robinson; born at Bern on the 13th of March 1782; became professor of philosophy there in 1806, and later, chief librarian. His larger works, and the great collection of his editing, Alpenrose, would hardly have preserved his name, which is known throughout the world for the idyllic simplicity, the vigor and interest of Der Schweizerische Robinson, which has been frequently translated—the first series into English in 1820, the second in 1849. He died in Berne on the 31st of March 1830.
