French writer and book-collector, born in Ballon, France, in 1809; died in London on the 8th of November 1891; studied at Chateau-Gontier; became a notary’s clerk; was in the government army in 1830 and again in 1838; again took up his work with the notary; in 1839 he published Le Commanditaire, a one-act comedy; in 1840 he published Seguidillas. The next eight years he spent in travel. Upon his return he joined in the publication of the newspaper, La Vraie République; prosecuted on account of the numerous offenses of the press, he was included in the general condemnation of 1851, and fled to England. He issued, in London, until 1879, a series of publications for those who were seeking rare and curious books; among such publications were Le Second Voyage de Vasco de Gama, an English version of a Dutch text, and Le Bibliophile Illustre.
